Venezia, as we the Romanian students imagine it

Writing the story - Steps 8 and 9

This coming week we shall focus on Adriana, our main character. Our work by the end of this week will be a paragraph about what we 'know' about her - what she does, needs, fears etc. - and a drawing of her - what students think she might look like.
This is a difficult step, as brainstorming is the main technique and we need to be in constant contact to make it work.
We should also think of a situation where a main 'bad' character comes in - another classmate perhaps, who stirs things up between Adriana and Cristina...
Have a fruitful week!

Main 'bad' character

We've been trying this past week to come up with a main 'bad' character and some more individuals related to the story besides Sandra and the school counsellor.
As the story involves students, we've decided that a teacher would be allright. Then perhaps some parents too. A narrator could come in handy, as maybe we will think of scenes that take place in 'exotic' locations like on a field trip to a museum in another city, or on an excursion by a lake during the weekend, so there should only be a (short) story about this, not the scene itself.
So far we've decided on these characters:
1. Adriana, main character, jealous friend;
2. Cristina, Adriana's friend;
3. Sandra, new girl at school;
4. Mr Johnson, school counsellor;
5. Mrs Taylor, teacher;
6. Parents - the 'need' of which parents will become clear during the writing of the story.
We still don't have a main 'bad' character, but we will surely think of something as the story unfolds itself.
Good work so far!

Writing the story - Step 7 - Making up all the characters of our story

So this is the winning summary:

MORE THAN ONE GOOD FRIEND

Sandra is a new girl at school. Adriana is jealous of Cristina as she seems to like Sandra better now. Adriana and Cristina have an argument, which is settled only in the counsellor's office. Adriana now understands that a person can have more than one good friend.

This is now the summary of our story!

Step no. 7 now:
We are to make up all the characters of our story: main good character, main character's sidekick, main bad character, 4 to 8 individuals related to the story.
We already have a main character, Adriana. And we could use Cristina as her sidekick. There is no obvious bad character, yet there's the new girl Sandra and the school counsellor. So we already have 4 characters. We should add a main bad character and other 2 to 6 supporting characters. We will do this in class and through email messages. Deadline: Thursday the 26th of March 2009.

Writing the story - Step 6 - Voting on the better summary

Vote on the best summary!
Deadline: Thursday the 19th of March 2009.

Writing the story - Step 5 - Rewriting the summaries

After one week of pondering upon the summaries, both teams have decided not to change anything.

The two summaries

These are the summaries that we decided on:

THE ROMANIAN TEAM:

Title: MORE THAN ONE GOOD FRIEND

Sandra is a new girl at school. Adriana is jealous of Cristina as she seems to like Sandra better now. Adriana and Cristina have an argument, which is settled only in the counsellor's office. Adriana now understands that a person can have more than one good friend.

THE ITALIAN TEAM:

Title: FRIENDS IN NEED, FRIENDS INDEED

Sandra, a girl who comes from a foreign country into a class, meets Cristina, a classmate, with whom she argues a lot from the very beginning. Their fights lead to a conflict between their two families, and also in the class - their classmates take sides. Sandra has a car accident and she is in hospital for a long time, while Cristina feels sorry for her. They both understand they have been wrong and begin to accept each other as friends.

All students involved in the project now have one week to try to rewrite these summaries - even if they do seem pretty ok to all of us... But perhaps we can improve on it. The two teams will work until next Friday (March the 13th), when we shall have two final summaries, one from the Italian team and one from the Romanian team.

Writing the story - Step 4 - Creating 4 sentences as the summary of our story

So FRIENDSHIP it is!
The students in the two teams now create four sentences that will make up the summary of the story - in class and through chat. Deadline: Friday the 6th of March, when the summaries will be written down on a big leaf of paper and displayed in a place in each school where all the participants can see it all day, every day, for a week. Each summary will have to be rewritten after a week of pondering upon it - this is Step 5.
